Wire cages are very bad for rabbits. Because it can cause sore hocks which is very painful. If you don’t give rabbit hay eventually they will die from an intestinal blockage

Yep. I got lucky and found a co-worker that had a BUNCH of cages when I had decided to start up. They were actually cheaper than the fuel to bring 'em home. THEN, (being a sheet metal man), I got the, (not so), bright idea to build my own copies for expansion. Problem with THAT is, I was an inexperienced idiot and bought ROLLS of wire. Built dozens of cages, sheet metal feeders, and nest boxes. Expanded my rabbit house 3 TIMES and THEN got sick of the time and expense of raising/maintaining 4 times the rabbits I should have had. (I'd already bought 2 extra freezers…..LOL.). CLASSIC 'beginner' mistakes. I've never actually LOST any money raising rabbits, but I darn sure got sick of the taste of 'em. AND the time I spent 'selling off' breeders and cages, (AND educating the 'newbies'), is time I wish I had back

When I do rabbits someday I am interested in working out a managed warren system, something perhaps not unlike what I’ve seen on the channel Be Not Slothful. It’s an interesting system. The way I figure it, the more an animal’s captive environment can mimic its natural environment, the happier the animal will be—which, in turn, results in a higher quality product. If you haven’t seen that system, I highly recommend checking it out! It is actually fairly inexpensive, it seems. Just fencing and plastic buckets, really. Best of luck with whatever you wind up doing with the rabbits! Thanks for sharing! 💖Chelsea

Ha ha I just made a video yesterday of building cages. Super easy to build and does not take long at all to build. And the more you need to build the cheaper it is. We have 27 rabbits now! I guess you can say we are going full bore.

It's too bad meat isn't sold by quality and weight instead of just weight. Curtis Stone said in one of his videos that it's hard to have a mixed production farm and make money with meat or dairy. I know of at least one restaurant I've been to that sells rabbit stew but don't know if it would be enough to sustain a farm of your size. Good luck and I hope you find buyers for the things you grow!

Time for heavy duty power washing on those cages. Another nice find Mrs. Cog Hill! Mary Carl is such a trooper with those chores. If you're going to build permanent cages you must see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCpRIkUnyuc

I enjoy seeing your family in the videos! the dancing too! I imagine those rabbit cages will work nicely at least until you decide how you want your set up to be. I had rabbits for about 10 years and if I were to do it all over again, I would build the inside hutch out of vinyl coated 1/2inch hardware cloth with a flip down door to get the poop out. I know folks say to get the 1 inch wire to let the poop fall through but that lets rats in and I would rather scrape out poop than feed rats. Rabbits usually only poop and pea in one corner of the hutch. Mine would hike their butts up so they could pea out of the hutch as far as possible. As you know, rabbit urine is nasty, it will take the paint off the house. My rabbits were pets and I let them out in the rabbit yard during the day and would put them up at night. I had them trained to jump up in the hutch for animal crackers.
