If you want to know how a piece should be played, listen to the composer playing it. Then if you think you know better, by all means do you own thing, but don't expect plaudits.

Eugene List does not respect the markings on the score of the concert version which emphasizes that this is not "roses round the door of yee olde Englande' but rather a garden of turnips and onions. The instructions also require the player to use a fist to strike the keyboard at one point. ev.

Grainger did not play this with wrong notes because he wanted. He played it like this because was very sick, this was an encore after played Grieg´s piano concerto, a terrible perfomance. The poor guy could not play anymore.

Grainger's performance is brilliant and hilarious. He grew to detest this piece since he played it so frequently as an encore. The over-the-top interpretation and wrong notes were entirely intentional. He was simply demonstrating his derision for the audience.

His band arrangement of this tune has several "wrong" notes sprinkled in for good measure. Bravo!

I've read that Rachmaninoff got sick and tired of his own very famous Prelude in C-sharp minor, because he was pushed by the appreciative audience to encore it at every concert.  Possibly Grainger had the same reason for despising his Country Gardens.

WTF? That sounds awful… reading the comments section saying he hated the song. Why?

It's too be Grainger hated this piece.  I  think it's wonderful.

Grainger hated this piece. But people did not leave him leave the auditorium until he played an encore of Country Gardens. He made mistakes on purpose.

Personally I believe Grainger is taking the lead here…. Apparently it was an unscheduled encore Mr List was not expecting but was happy to join in as part of the fun.

I must be honest about this – the Eugene List does the work far better justice.  Everything is clear, and the tempo is absolutely perfect.  Grainger's own performance is a total mess, especially toward the end of the piece.  I'm sure
there must be a reason why his performance is out of proper control, but I cannot and will not speculate on it.

Heyookj Why condescend? I realize that not all good music is "pretty" music.I also know–because Grainger has written about it extensively–that Grainger was bent on catching the spirit of a piece, and less concerned about accuracy as a virtue. But he was also a concert pianist, and his career suffered as his technique declined. I'm a great admirer of his musicianship, his compositions, and his enormous contributions, but I think you're wrong to suggest he was deliberately sloppy to make a point.

You know, by the end of his life is when he started experimenting with the "free music" concept. I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted it to sound like this. I love it, personally (whether he meant to or not). Have you heard his revamped Irish Tune from County Derry? I doesn't even have a tonal center! Not all good music is "pretty" music 🙂

We are now into comment and delete, are we petite fille? I shall oblige too..

Would not do for the 'fragile' image you wish to present here to leave that 'grandpa" post on now, would it? 😉

I'm older than you; had many relationships, one of long standing happiness today. From all the time you have to be two different persona's on two different channels, no surprise you've yet to figure out how to have ONE. That MAY come with maturity of emotionally growing up; when do you plan to do so?

Two accounts; how many different personalities? One seemingly so fragile, another self centered and angry…which your relentless private messaging has success in manipulating…your YT 'raison de tre'. 😉

"YT could not find a better hater than him." They have, in YOU….

Just check the dishonest and emotionally unbalanced rants on your Disscusion page at your channel…they will be…

At least, Jeanne, in your two accounts, you are the same decent person. You don't pose as a friend on some channels and viciously insult and abuse people on others. You do have two accounts – but they focus on sharing great music, not on harassing and abusing people. I continue to receive messages of hate from this same character. He has the temerity to write to me and accuse me of indulging in hate speech, much frowned upon by YT. YT could not find a better hater than him.

And, just to be clear Menurella/danali45/Jeanne/Oriane (which one exactly ARE you..confusion, eh?) tho' we have mutually blocked, I shall still comment on opinion counter to my own…or add correction when interesting or important to me to do so on other posters video's. That is what YT is all about…

Sad that calm, intelligent debate and musical openness is not your over-sentimental passion…à tout à l’heure.

Poor Percy was an original in many ways…and invited controversy, which this comment section amply demonstrates. I love him…but the other reaction is equally extreme, and perhaps valid for some….

MY favorite anecdote on him was one reaction after hearing his piece 'Colonial Song' in 1914. Sir Thomas Beecham wrote to him: "My dear Grainger, you have achieved the almost impossible! You have written the worst piece of modern times"!

Geert Dehoux: There's a huge difference between a "professional pianist" whose actual pianistic distinction consists of placing well in a minor contest 34 years ago; and a concert pianist, who plays professionally in realms you can only dream of.

Nice to have you here in this venue, slugging it out like a schoolboy and pretending to be someone you're not–which is especially charming because you're utterly unaware of it. It's a very special vulnerability and sets you apart. Keep advertising!

i remember a funny anecdote about Grainger and the infamous Country Gardens. He became absolutely sick of playing the piece because come encore time the audience woiuld beg him to play it. one day he turned to the audience and said, "The typical English garden is most usually a vegetable plot. So, as i play this you may think of turnips rather than roses."

gullivor: You say, "I'm bored of these comments…." I suggest two things. First, you don't have to read them. Just quit. Cold turkey. The other suggestion is that you leave the blogging to others. You make grammatical mistakes in your only sentence. You're not "bored of these comments." You're bored BY the comments. Please, can you change your style to reflect an understanding of elementary English usage? That will require a massage IQ infusion. Thanks so much.

    Dear Doctor,

Sorry to say, but your Belgian patient Walter SCHUERMANS isn't intelligent, neither is he a gifted musician, at all!

Hope this information will help you for his treatment.

    Cordially,

    Geert N.M. Dehoux, professional pianist.

    Dear Doctor,

I understand this Walter SCHUERMANS must be a hell of a patient!
Nevertheless, may I ask you to keep him locked up where a lunatic like him belongs, WITHOUT any form of access to the internet at all, please ?!!

As I've received complaints by several people in the last days about this coward's obsessive misbehaviour, I'm sure something will be worked out to take his poor little son away from such a bad father.

    Thanks in advance,

    Yours sincerely,

To the arrogant Geert Dehoux: You posted the following and then withdrew it: "Singular triumph" ?? HAHA!! Have a look at my website, you arrogant and ignorant guy!"
I looked at your website before I ever said a word to you. Hey. You're pretending to be a concert pianist. I've seen puffy resumes like yours time and again from failed pianists. When was your last PAID recital that wasn't in a cafe? You should stop pretending to be someone you're not. Or at least get better at it

Geert: You responded to one of my posts with this: "Pretending you KNOW about music and great pianists "does us no favours".Percy Grainger belongs to the greatest pianists/MUSICIANS in history! Geert Dehoux, pianist.Belgian King's Prize Winner, 1979."
Then you withdrew this post, apparently to avoid a reply. I have little room but will go with established opinion rather than a pianist whose singular triumph was placing somewhere down the ladder in a contest 34 years ago. Went to your head.
