Do the wood chips need to be aged before applying? I have an arbourist friend who drops off mulch and I cant find any info on if its ok to apply right away.

I too am fortunate to get wood chips from my town. this year I'm going to mulch around my veg plants with it. is there any benefit to shredding it again before using it? I'm concerned that since it's free it'll be chunky. I should say that I'm not in a hurry for it to break down as I'm also making my own compost. as a matter of fact I've already top dressed the whole garden area. btw, I've watched a few of your videos and enjoyed them all.

Looks your more up north than down south like here in Florida were its sand, sand and more sand. Does the wood chips help with the sand we have ?

Chip drop is useless in the country. You are better with contacting your utility company. In my case, I offered them a place to dump all they wanted and got several loads.

When should you apply the wood chips? Before or after planting seeds? Thank you

I messaged a bunch of tree service companies in my area on Kijiji and within 24 hrs I had around 5 yds dropped off on my driveway. Very clean, finely chopped pine tree. Great mix of needles, bark and wood.

My problem in my area with free wood chips is that no one can guarantee they arent sprayed with chemicals. I got free wood chip mulch once from the city and it was loaded with plastic debris. I see utility companies cutting trees and stuff but who can say if that tree was sprayed with cancer causing chemicals? To me there is no reason to grow organic if you already wonder about the integrity of your sources. Because of this, I plan on renting a chipper and chipping dead wood from my brothers land this year. Lots of work, but if I make it work the 100$ to rent the chipper then its ok to me.

Wood, chips or otherwise, must have available nitrogen to decompose aerobically. Adding nitrogen will dramatically speed up decomposition. Sprayed liquid nitrogen fertilizer works best.

I have a horse arena just down the road from me where I can get all the wood shavings I want. In addition there is plenty of horse manure in the mix. The one additional thing I do is lay down newspaper (about 3 layers think) and then add the compost of horse manure and wood chips on top of that. I have little to no weeds as a result. In the spring I turn it all with my tiller. The top layer of chips and compost have been rotting over the past summer and winter and as a result I've never had need of any soil additives.

Anyone that keeps horses is more than glad for you to take all you want. I try and get some that has been rotting (aged) for some time and has already started to break down.

I have had 4 yds of woodchips in my driveway for 2 years. It did heat up considerably. May I safely use these as compost? Thanks.

Great video! I love everything about it but I have just one small quibble. I see that you reference Dr. Chalker Scott. You might not know that she's recently concluded that walnut leaves are NOT allelopathic.

I tried this and told my friend about it, she put it all over her property. Both of us had millions of slugs. Did you have slug problems? They seem to thrive in wood chips.

Your garden and presentations are outstanding,.. I have a wood chip question, please? I have a big pile of wood chips that were delivered over 1 year ago. They came to heat in my driveway, last summer after delivery. I am adding Permaculture type beds along my property line, over kava rock gravel, already there. My question is can I use these chips as a first layer over the rock, then add straw, compost, a green layer and finish with a layer of compost? I want to ensure good drainage?

Wood chip mulch (and compost) is free in my town for residents. This is made from the yardwaste, fall leaf pickup, & tree trimming the city does. It's $20 per truckload for the mulch, or free if you just scoop buckets full yourself.

Great tips on how to use the wood chip for mulch. I just started to use it for our walkways since our soil here in North Texas is heavy clay. When it rains it is hard not to track mud all around the garden and in the house.
