john, i have no experience but last year a chesnut from the supermarket started to germinate so i planted it into a small pot. When it had 2 leaves i bought a big tree pot, went to home depot to get soil but bought nothing instead i collected rich forest ground (litterally) to put into the big pot and transplanted the plant. The tree grew really quick in the big pot, after 3 month it was 5 feet tall and that was indoor ! When it became taller than the window it stopped getting light at the top and completely stopped growing, the bud at the top even dried and fell off. Since then it has not grown but the stem is woody and about as thick as a little finger.
The top leaves have curled into spirals. I don't know what that means . The soil is too compact it has nothing in it to keep moisture. One time i overwatered but it recovered and i learned from that mistake. I want to plant the tree outside now. It has some leaves bigger than a hand.

what state do you live in? I live in Utah, should I put bare root trees in the fall just before the snow? or should I put them out in the late winter just before the spring, when the snow melts?

    hey great info.. I have a ??
I'm an indoor grower for non-fruit trees. legally medical. for patient with degenerative disc disorder.
I was wondering on if I should try the soil you have, I've tried soo many typed and I've settled on the Company/Brand called (Arura innovations) they make everything, and the soil brand is called "Roots Organics"..
Their are several types of soil. confusing if ur not farmiliar with the company.. but I am currently using the "707" type of organic soil. it's a coco based soil. helps hold water. but leaches out some calcium. so I add "oxy-cal". it breaks down to oxygen and calcium over time.. (Aurora innovations – Roots organics "707"…)
Have you tried roots organics soils at all? is it worth switching? maybe you could look at what the soil offers compared to yours and see if it worth it to try.? more beneficial bacteria, microrizzea ect the better. water with molasses water to help feed them.
The soil I buy is just under 30$ for 1.5cubic ft.. expensive but it has over a dozen additives.
try looking into it if not.
I'd love to hear back. Thanx ( I get a lot of messages so if it takes me a few to reply, my appologies.)

I want to grow Apricots too! Thanks so much for the info!  How are your trees doing now? Do you plan to keep them in the same pots? Any new advice on ultra dwarf fruit trees now that you've had them for awhile?
