Hello Calikim. Gonna make 9,10 foot cages next year for cucumbers. Yes, gonna use some 8 foot stakes to keep it anchored and stable. I will grow 3 cucumber plants and they surely will latch on to the cage very well with the tendrils, and they will surely will grow to the top and beyond. They will absolutely be loaded up with cucumbers and i will use a step ladder to harvest. Best to have someone hold your ladder. But this will save lots of space by growing vertical, and they will be perfectly healthy via the air flow.

I just planted my beefsteak tomatoe outside in my garden this morning. I am planting it in compost with native soil beneath it. I laid mine sideways to allow a larger root system and amended the compost with some organic fertilizer (bone meal, worm castings, green sand, blood meal). I started my seeds indoors and chose the strongest one. I doubt I will get a HUGE tomatoe but it will be fun to follow along with you guys in the challenge. I plan to water with worm tea once a week and an organic fertilizer once a month. This will be fun!

I grew 4 Beefsteak heirlooms last year. I didn't prune a single 'sucker' and they all grew 14 ft +. I got like 70 qts of tomatoes canned from them plus countless many eaten as sandwiches! One tomato was a 2 hander! Grown in compost and horse manure.

Hi Kim I'm growing several tomato varieties and many of them of growing fast and already flowering. However a couple of my plants are less that a foot tall and already flowering. Why is that?

Kim, you're ambitious if nothing else. My guess is that plant is still at least a month from maturity, and by then it will be far too hot for it to set fruit. Not trying to discourage you, but this challenge doesn't seem very even. Gary is in a climate where his plants will set fruit for months, while hotter climates like my own in N. Texas are gonna be far too hot very soon. You should be allowed to grow your tomato in the fall when fruit set resumes. Just do it in the same amount for time, maybe. Maybe you and I could do a challenge one day. I plan on starting my channel soon.

Personally, I think that fish will take a couple of years to completely decompose. Meaning, a long term nitrogen source. Always good stuff.

Have you ever cross pollinated tomatoes?

I want to try with a tigerella tomato and a cold tolerant tomato.

    What are your suggestions?

Oh my gosh, this is going to be quite the contest!! All in great fun and I’m keeping my eye on this one closely to see who the winner will be! I was wondering if there’s been any specifics on the end tomato? Will the one with just the biggest tomato be the winner or will it be the one with the biggest RIPE tomato?? I’m going to try and join in the fun and try to grow my own tomato and see what I can do as well but this will be my first year growing and so I’m not expecting to grow a contender. Thanks for the hard work and keeping the fun going! You and Gary are two of my favorite YouTube channels ☺️
