I grew up in South America in Chile and we had a Persimmon tree in my house. My grandmother has several loquat trees too. That's one of the fruit I miss the most. Loquats are incredible yummy!.

Also, I like fruit trees because they are really low maintenance. Vegetable gardens just take more work than I'm willing to put in. With a tree I can just plant it and make sure it's got water and then eventually I'll get something out of it.

Man, I just paid $2.50 for ONE Fuyu persimmon. I had never had one before so I wanted to try it. It tasted great, but definitely not worth $2.50 for a single one. I'm on the east coast US. It encouraged me to plant a persimmon tree though because I can't be paying that much every time I want to eat one.

Hey John, you can plant many fruit trees in an urban setting. Check out Dave Wilson nursery's website about backyard orchard culture. Or check out their YouTube videos.

Not all trees/shurbs take many years before fruiting. They should usually be produced vegatatively, since plants produced from seed will vary from the parent plants. If people buy young trees to plant, they will save years of time – and save on electricity from the shade!

People plant shade trees, ornamentals, and shrubs – all of which can also produce food. Some nut & fruit trees/shrubs are obvious, others are less so (like Lousa dogwood fruit, or the edible pods produced by redbud trees, for instance). As you say, John, we can have lots of fun experimenting and trying things out of the ordinary!

How often do you water your persimmon tree? My persimmon trees died with too much water.

Do you think the loquat trees would grow in Canada? because here snows alot in winter and it might not help. By the way im in Ontario region.

Loquats are amazing! I remember eating them and the Fejoias in my mom's yard right off the trees in Rohnert Park, CA as I played in the front yard as a child. I took them for granted. Now I'm going to have to take care of her yard and my own since I am so inspired by what you do and how you grow.

Do you have any goose berry plants? Very good fruit and is used in Ayurveda a lot. Black Elderberry trees are smaller and produce a good amount of fruit too, great for cold tinctures.

John, the Persimmon tree was grafted when you got it or did you grow it from seed? I heard they take forever to fruit, so I've been thinking about getting a good graft from somewhere (and want to express after tasting "That's the best persimmon I've ever had!" lol 🙂

I think growing your own fruit is possible. That's as many persimmons as I would eat in one year. And the tree is just going to grow more each year!

If I had a dollar for every time I started talking about Loquats and someone says, "oh, like kumquats." I'm still suprised at how many people don't know about this fruit but recognize the trees.

    Many years. Maybe 6.

Not as much sucess as I would have liked.
