I like this. Thank you. I use cattle panel all the time so familiar with that but really like like the bamboo pole idea. I don't have any bamboo poles at this time but could use some of the left over 2" schedule 40 water pipe I have. I also cover T-Posts with the water pipe and cap it. I don't have enough cattle panel this year (and not going to buy anymore) to do the tent style frame but will do one existing straight wall of cattle panel and one at an angle. I have never grown watermelons before so looking forward to this little adventure….squash, zucchini, and cantaloupe yes but not watermelon. I am growing the personal watermelons not just for me but for my 2 little mini donkeys who absolutely love watermelon.

This is a great idea and I did the exact same in my garden. BUT should note that the melons only grow on the down side. I haven't yet had a melon to grow on the side that the vine is climbing. Saving the space is worth it but always wonder how many more I would have if they where lying flat on the ground.

That was brilliant!!! The whole time you were talking I kept thinking what about when they start getting heavy they will never hold up. Then out came the bamboo. Nice.

Does any one have any information on where I can get the items in this video to make this trellis and what they are called?

I've never grown watermelon before, but I unintentionally did sometime just like this!!!… I had left over fencing that I bent into like a upside down "U" shape and put in my garden to keep the dog out, Now the watermelon has grown on top of the fencing and under it is all the lettuce 🙂

But I thought for the plant to produce a second fruit , it will have to vine off into soil at some point.  Wouldn't this method stunt potential growth?, Awesome idea though

I was thinking about growing my watermelons vertically next year but i have read that when grown vertically they don't ripen as well and may possibly have a harder time getting nutrients having to fight gravity. Did you have any issues with that or think they were any less sweet or anything of that nature? Or would you recommend growing vertically?

you can find "cattle panels" at any Farm & Home store. The bamboo will be harder to come by?

I've been planning this method for growing all our large fruit, vining vegetables and fruits. The bamboo was the missing bit for me Phil. Cheers mate for sharing it. All the best David T.

I love that idea! It also provides a solution for my problem with finding an area for the shade loving plants. This also looks quite nice.
