They were both classy even living in poverty. Class is something you are born with.

@sisalrug REALLY? what a narrowed perspective! Physical character is not what the story is about! It amazes me people miss the true tragedy of the story! It is NOT about BIG Edie! the tragedy is the life of LITTLE EDIE! You experience a mom of selfish controlling needs like her and see how sane you turn out to be after that many yrs? It is a subtle demeaning control with words of love to remind her of her purpose! The best manipulators know how to break people down GENTLY! for their Purpose

Little Edie was cheated of a life by her mother! Edie may disagree because she protected her mother so defiantly! But that is what victims sometimes do…especially in an era of the 1950's..when women were suppressed and made to feel that everything was THEIR fault! how ridiculous that this speculation has not been made with all the knowledge in the world today??? many kids of abuse still support and love a parent or two!

I have read through so many comments and the one perspective that is missing is the sad truth of the probable chances that little Edie was a victim of child abuse whether of physical, emotional, psychological, and most probable manipulation! seriously! the evidence is speckled all over the documentary and then more convincing with the edited clips….I love this story and I find Little Edie definitely eccentric is the most fascinating, bizarre, disturbing and need to embrace way!

The story give hints throughout in which, I believe Edie intentionally gives of her circumstance. I find her mother nothing less than SELFISH! of using her daughter in order to not be alone while blaming her all the while, but a daughter who's love overcomes the buried resentment! Honestly? the truth is in the story line and I find it completely TRAGIC!

I love when things happen in life that feel like a warm blanket. Grey Gardens will always be that for me.

I’m very taken with the outfit at 3:07. If something similar were to walk off a Paris runway, circa now, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.

where do all those clothes come from? they never leave, no one ever comes there, the closets are full? we know they probably never did laundry.
